چکیده

Rations containing approximately 85% ground high-moisture, ensiled corn were fed to steers in such a way as to produce lactic acid acidosis, and three dietary buffers were evaluated in regard to their effect on ruminal and systemic acidosis. The buffers consisted of (1) 2% sodium bentonite, (2) 1% sodium bentonite plus 1% dolomitic limestone, and (3) 1% sodium bentonite plus 1% potassium bicarbonate (KHCOa). Using ruminal pHs, lactic acid and glucose concentrations as indices of ruminal acidosis, the combination of sodium bentonite and KHCOa was most effective in reducing the degree of ruminal acidosis. The relative changes in the base excess values of blood samples indicated that a combination of either sodium bentonite plus dolomitic limestone or sodium bentonite plus KHCOa was beneficial in enabling the steers to return to a normal acid-base status at 24 hours post-feeding.

Effects of sodium hydroxide treatment of dried distillers' grains on digestibility, ruminal metabolism, and metabolic acidosis of feedlot steers.

The objectives were to determine the optimum inclusion of NaOH necessary to buffer the acidity of dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) and its effects on digestibility, ruminal metabolism, and metabolic acidosis in feedlot steers. Rumen cannulated Angus-crossed steers were blocked by BW (small: 555 ± 42 kg initial BW, = 4; large: 703 ± 85 kg initial BW, = 4) over four 21-d periods in a...

Ruminal microbial and fermentative changes associated with experimentally induced subacute acidosis in steers.

We used six ruminally cannulated steers in a two-period crossover design to study ruminal fermentative and microbial changes associated with induced subacute acidosis. Steers were adapted to either an 80% alfalfa hay (hay-adapted)- or corn grain (grain-adapted)-based concentrate diet. After feed was withheld for 24 h, steers were overfed with an all-grain diet at 3.5 x NEm daily for 3 d. Rumina...

Effects of DL-malate on ruminal metabolism and performance of cattle fed a high-concentrate diet.

To determine the effects of DL-malate on ruminal metabolism, four steers equipped with ruminal cannulas were fed an 80% rolled grain (75% corn:25% wheat) diet twice daily with a DMI equal to 2.0% of BW (485+/-24.8 kg). DL-Malate was infused into the rumen on two consecutive days in 500 mL of phosphate buffer to provide 0, 27, 54, or 80 g of DL-malate/d. Ruminal pH linearly increased (P < .01) w...

Feeding wet corn gluten feed to reduce subacute acidosis in cattle.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on subacute acidosis in cattle. In Exp. 1, 60 individually fed yearling steers (270 +/- 22 kg BW) were used in a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Steers were assigned to one of five dietary treatments: 1) dry-rolled corn (DRC), 2) 35% WCGF fed d 1 to 132, 3) 86.5% WCGF fed d 1 reduced to 35% ...

Influence of malic acid supplementation on ruminal pH, lactic acid utilization, and digestive function in steers fed high-concentrate finishing diets.

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the influence of malic acid supplementation on ruminal fermentation. In Trial 1, six Holstein steers (300 kg) with ruminal cannulas were used in a crossover design experiment to study the influence of malic acid (MA) on ruminal metabolism during glucose-induced lactic acidosis. Treatments consisted of a 77% steam-flaked barley-based finishing diet supplemen...
